If a whistleblower provides information to the IRS about another party’s unpaid taxes, the person could receive an award. The IRS pays awards of at least 15%, but not more than 30%, of the collected proceeds resulting from an administrative or judicial action. In fiscal 2017, the IRS Whistleblower Office made 242 award payments totaling just under $34 million, according to its annual report to Congress.
